1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially for Producers and Adjusters

13 hours biennially for Customer Service Representatives

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the licensee's birth month, biennially.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers and Adjusters must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement.

State Law
2 hrs - Producers and Adjusters must complete 2 hrs of state legislative updates as part of the total requirement.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Suitability
4 hrs - Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour Annuity Suitability Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products.

Long-Term Care Partnership
8/4 hrs - Producers must complete an initial 8-hour Long-Term Care Partnership (LTCP) Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long-Term Care Partnership products/policies. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 4-hour ongoing LTC training, due every renewal thereafter.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Earthquake Coverage
1 hr - All resident agents, adjusters and CSRs with a property line of authority must complete a 1-hour course on earthquake coverage every renewal cycle.  Enforcement of this requirement will begin 1/1/2015.

Flood
1 hr - All resident producers, adjusters, CSRs and non-resident adjusters with a Property line of authority must complete an approved 1-hour NFIP Flood Insurance Certification Training every renewal period.  Enforcement of this requirement will begin 1/1/2019.

As of 9/15/2019, the 1 hour CE Flood requirement will no longer be effective.  License renewals processed prior to 9/15/19 will be required to complete the 1 hour requirement.  The Flood course category will continue to exist for active CE courses.  The category will apply towards general credit for all license types.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

A maximum of 6 hours may be carried forward into the renewal period.  Hours will be carried over as general credit.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a two-year period.  Completion dates must be at least 24 months apart.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Non-residents - exempt if licensee's home state requires the same or greater CE and has a reciprocal agreement
